“Learn to enjoy every minute of life. Be happy now. Don’t wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it’s at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored. “ -Earl Nightingale
The holiday season tends to bring with it an array of emotions like joy, excitement, festivity, stress, anxiety, and fatigue, as well as social and familial obligations, extensive planning and prepping, and financial burdens. It is easy to get caught up in the not-so-jubilant side of the holidays, especially when holiday priorities get a bit mixed up.
What’s the true meaning of the holidays? It is really all about presents and the obligatory parties? It’s important to take a moment before the calendar clocks in at December 1, to really think about what you really want this month to be like. This time of the year shouldn’t be one that brings on emotional and financial anxiety, heavy bouts of fatigue, a bah humbug attitude, or in-concrete commitments to every single holiday gathering. This time of the year should be one of joyous celebration and lightheartedness.
It’s all about priorities. What brings you the most joy during this month? Is it baking traditional holiday cookies like you did when you were a child? Is it walking around the neighborhood and looking at all the Christmas lights? Is it getting together with your closest friends and family for eight nights in a row? Is it that first cup of coffee on Christmas morning and waiting for your children to come unwrap that one present they’ve wanted all year long? Is it putting on a sparkling dress and toasting to a brand new year with the people who are most important in your life?
Our traditions and beliefs are all different, but it is those traditions and beliefs that make this time of the year so special. Remember why you celebrate. Make time for the traditions that mean the most to you. Make time for the people who bring light and love into your life. The holidays are about “rejoicing with your family in the beautiful land of life,” as Albert Einstein once said.
This month we will be offering a series on “how to survive the holiday season” with tips on staying active, eating healthy, reducing stress, and enjoying this glorious month to the fullest.
Thanks for sharing a smile with us today!

And so it begins…the holidays are rapidly approaching and in the blink of an eye we will be counting down to the first minute of a brand new year. Between Thanksgiving, holiday parties, holiday shopping, traditional feast preparations, and family visits or visits to the family; and then throw in work and your regular responsibilities and you’re in a full-blown holiday hustle for the next two months. It is important though to make time to take care of yourself and your health.
We tend to eat more than we normally do, exercise less and fall out of our healthy routines, spend more money than we should, and overexert and exhaust ourselves by RSVP-ing “yes” to everything. We also tend to make resolutions for the new year at New Year’s Eve and then never really follow through with them.
We make these pseudo promises to ourselves to lose weight, eat healthier, drink less, exercise more, et cetera. But then two months before we attempt these changes, we gain weight, over indulge in holiday treats, drink more alcohol, and skip out on our exercise routines, which in the end makes the new year and those resolutions so much harder to start and stick to.
Let’s make this year different! Let’s take a more mindful approach to the holiday season. While Christmas music can come too soon, taking care of your mind and body is best sooner rather than later. When you take care of yourself, everything else will fall into place. There is nothing more important than your health and the health of your family.
For the next two months, we would like to take this mindful holiday journey with you and share with you ideas, inspiration, and advice for making this holiday season a healthy and happy one. At Parker Dentistry Facial Rejuvenation and Wellness, we are more than just a dental practice, but we obviously want to see you and are going to start this series off with 7 motivating reasons why you should come visit us before the end of the year. Stay tuned!
Thank you for sharing a smile with us this week.
Don't forget--your smile is one of your most valuable personal assets. If it looks deeply stained or chipped, it detracts from how you look and from your self-confidence. Why not show off a beautiful smile with porcelain veneers from your cosmetic dentists at Parker Dentistry in Hollywood, FL? Shell-like covers of fine dental porcelain permanently bonded to the front of healthy teeth, veneers beautify smile aesthetics, giving you a look just right for you.
Why use porcelain veneers?
Drs. Stephen and Blake Parker offer porcelain veneers--also called dental laminates--for patients who have healthy teeth and gums but exhibit enamel defects such as:
- Chips, pits and cracks
- Deep stains which can't respond to professional whitening
- Gaps and mild crowding
- Uneven length and odd shape
Besides creating an bright and even look, veneers strengthen tooth enamel and last for ten years or more. Considered a permanent smile enhancement, veneers resists stains and chips, and they cannot decay. Plus, they are so popular that millions of Americans have use them to improve their smiles.
During a personal consultation with your cosmetic dentist in Hollywood, FL, you can discuss how you'd like to improve your smile. Dr. Parker will evaluate your oral health and what changes he feels could be accomplished with porcelain veneers. With an agreed upon treatment plan in place, expect to receive your veneers in just a couple of visits to Parker Dentistry.
Because you'll need a little extra space in your mouth to accommodate your veneers, Dr. Parker will resurface your teeth, removing about 1/2 millimeter of enamel. Then, he'll take oral impressions and clean your teeth. Dr. Parker also places temporary veneers to keep you comfortable and smiling as the permanent ones are crafted. The impressions go to a dental lab in the area where a skilled technician will sculpt each veneer from color-matched ceramic.
At your next appointment, the dentist removes the temporary veneers and uses a special etching liquid and bonding cement to place the permanent laminates. He'll fit them carefully against your gum tissue to avoid any irritation or sensitivity. Additionally, he colors the bonding cement for a completely natural look. After curing the cement and adjusting the bite, the veneer process is complete.
Caring for porcelain veneers
Expect your dental laminates to last about ten years or more. Just brush and floss carefully as you usually do and see your cosmetic dentist, Dr. Parker and his team every six months for your routine exams and cleanings. Avoid chewing hard foods such as taffy, ice or peanut brittle, and wear a bite guard if you grind your teeth or play sports.

Don't end up with teeth like these!
While Halloween might be over, you probably have enough candy to last you until at least next Halloween now, especially if you have kids or didn’t receive an anticipated high number of tricker treaters. The average bag of loot from tricker treating contains around 11,000 calories worth of sweets! On average, Americans buy 600 millions pounds of candy for Halloween. That candy doesn’t just go away, it just changes from one hand to another.
As your dentist, we feel obliged to share some helpful information for keeping your mouth and body healthy now that you have an abundance of candy at your disposal.
First and foremost, don’t forget to brush and floss at least twice a day. It is also important to brush and floss after eating candy. As we all know, sugar is a mortal enemy of your teeth! Sticky and hard candies are especially detrimental.
Make sure that you drink plenty of water. Aside from the health benefits and importance of staying hydrated, drinking water will help rinse the mouth of sugar after eating candy. Avoid drinking sugary juices and sodas. We recommend staying away from sugary drinks at all times, but especially when you are consuming extra sugar by enjoying your Halloween treats.
Save your candy consumption for after meals. You are less likely to over consume when you have a belly full of a nutritious meal. Your Halloween candy should be a treat, not a meal. Smarties candy has the least amount of calories, only 25 calories a pack, if you are looking for a calorie-smart choice. Also, opt for mini or fun-sized candies instead of eating a whole full sized bar or pack.
Sugar is addicting. The more you eat the more you will crave. Be wary of high fructose corn syrup, which unfortunately seems to be in everything. This refined sugar can affect your memory, cause inflammation in your brain, and numb leptin, the hormone that tells your body when it is full.
Save some for next Halloween. Chocolate, especially when kept in the freezer, is good for up to two years. Just because you have it, doesn’t mean you have to eat it or have to eat it everyday. Enjoy your post-Halloween treats in small moderation. You’ll enjoy them more if you savor them instead of binge eating them.
We wish you a sweet week that is full of smiles!
